Right now, I'm supposed to be somewhere over the North Sea en route to Vienna. Instead I'm back at my friend’s house writing this on his computer because I missed my flight! I stood at the check-in desk, with my bags and ticket in hand, blinking like an idiot as the check-in lady informed me that I was more of an idiot than I thought if I reckoned I could board a flight 30 minutes before departure.
Just my kind of luck that there should be major delays on the underground, on my way to the airport. We were literally crawling! Even allowing for my bags, I could have probably beat our train there on foot. Every time we'd get to a station I seriously considered getting off and chancing with a local bus; which in retrospect was I good thing a didn't because I'd probably be lost somewhere right now with no bags, cash or ID. I also had the misfortune of ending up at the wrong terminal and having to find my way back. Not that any of this makes for a good excuse, because the rule when travelling in London is to allow for the unexpected, and then some. Lesson learned!
My friends are being super generous and trying to cheer my up, but you can imagine that I'm not laughing much. I guess one day I'll find the silver lining in all of this and laugh about it. There were no more flights leaving for Vienna today so I better start looking for the next open seats... once I've eaten. Man, I'm hungry!
